Kybella Q & A

What causes a double chin?

A double chin, called submental fullness in medical terms, is a common complaint among men. This change in your profile is caused by a layer of fat beneath your chin.

There are numerous factors that can contribute to a double chin, including:

  • Age, due to decreased skin elasticity
  • Weight gain
  • Poor posture
  • Genetic predisposition

A double chin can make you appear heavier than you really are, which is frustrating for men who are otherwise in good shape.

Can exercises improve a double chin?

There are a number of exercises that claim to strengthen the muscles in your face and neck. While there is no strong evidence that these moves yield results for a double chin, there is plenty of research to suggest that incorporating neck stretching and gentle exercises can reduce neck pain.

Exercising to reduce fat beneath your chin is not likely to be effective. Weight loss occurs throughout your body, and it’s impossible to direct where those changes will be most visibly apparent.

What can be done to treat a double chin?

A powerful new treatment tool is stirring up excitement in the medical and aesthetic communities. Called Kybella, this treatment effectively destroys a portion of targeted fat cells to refine the contours of the area beneath your chin.

Kybella works by delivering a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid to the fat cells beneath your chin. This is a substance your body produces naturally to help break down dietary fats. The synthetic version works in much the same way.

Kybella is administered in a series of shallow injections. Numbing medication keeps you comfortable throughout the treatment, which takes less than 20 minutes.

Once in place, Kybella destroys a portion of your fat cells, causing them to release stored fat. The dead cells are processed and eliminated from your body by your lymphatic system, and will never regenerate.

You may reach your treatment goals with just one session, but some men need additional treatments to achieve the desired effects. It takes a few months to determine how well your body responds to Kybella and determine if additional sessions are needed.

It’s important to note that while the destroyed fat cells are gone forever, your remaining fat cells can still expand and contract as you gain or lose weight. Kybella is best suited for men who’ve reached a healthy weight and are able to maintain those results over time.
